Vessel Mycelium

Cornell University, Spring 2021, Elective

Independent project

Instructor: Marta H. Wisniewska

Inspired by rolling whiskey glasses, this pencil holder was designed with a cylindrical body, tapered top, and conical base, allowing it to oscillate playfully while remaining functional from multiple directions. Realized in mycelium composite, the vessel acquires a rustic, wabi-sabi surface reminiscent of Japanese Raku wares and, once withered, can be returned to the soil through composting. The project also explored how digitally fabricated moulds guide the growth of mycelium, producing artistic and materially expressive surface qualities.
